Synthetic Phonics and Analytical Phonics | TEC

Two of the most important types of phonics instructional methods and approaches are synthetic phonics and analytic phonics. This two will definitely help beginners to learn how to read in a faster way.

One of the differences between the methods is that in synthetic phonics the pronunciation of the word is learned through sounding and blending, this is the first step to reading and learning how to pronounce a particular word, whereas, in analytic phonics, beginners analyze letters sounds after the word has been learned.

Synthetic phonics is also known as blended phonics or inductive phonics because it simply teaches the letter sounds and combines them to blend these sounds to execute the pronunciation of whole words.

This method is one of the most common methods because we first identify letter sounds. Once the learner already identified the letter sounds, the learner can proceed to blend the letter sounds together.

Let’s convert letters into sounds and then blend the sounds to form recognizable words.

Step 1: Show the word and identify the letters

/a/ ant

Step 2:

Once the letters have been identified, Identify the sounds of the letters

/a/ ah /n/ nuh /t/ tuh

Step 3:

Blend the sounds together.

(Ah-nuh-tuh)

Step 4:

Pronounce the word and Identify the meaning of the word.

Ant- a small insect, often with a sting, that usually lives in a complex social colony with one or more breeding queens.

Analytic Phonics is also known as implicit phonics. This method starts at the whole word level. In this way, teachers show students a series of pictures that start with a particular sound and are followed by identifying the other sounds later on.

For example bat, boat, ban, bar, band, bake, bus, bet, bend, bay

After that, the student will recognize the difference between two words by analyzing the letters within the words.

How is the word “band” like the word “bend”?

The student will recognize the sound letters and compare the two words in the word “band” there is /a/ whereas in the word “bend” there is /e/.

Since you already learned the difference between the two methods, you can now choose which method is easy to teach your student how to read. Always remember to start teaching the basic words or a three-letter word.
