✅ 10 English Words You’re Probably Saying Wrong (And How to Fix Them)

Let’s face it: English pronunciation can be a tricky beast. Silent letters, confusing syllables, and words that look one way but sound another? Yikes. But don’t worry—we’ve got your back.

Get ready to level up your speech and impress your friends, coworkers, or English teacher with your refined pronunciation. Let’s bust some myths and fix those slip-ups, one word at a time.

1. Mischievous

Wrong: mis-CHEE-vee-us
Right: MIS-chuh-vus

This tongue-twister adds an extra syllable that doesn’t belong! It’s three syllables, not four.

🧠 Fun fact: This word comes from the Old French meschevée, meaning “unfortunate.”

2. Pronunciation

Wrong: pro-noun-ciation
Right: pro-NUN-ciation

Ironically, one of the most mispronounced words is the word “pronunciation.” (No “noun” in it!)

3. Et cetera

Wrong: ek-set-er-uh / ex-cetera
Right: et-SET-er-uh

No “X” here, folks. Just a classy Latin phrase that means “and the rest.”

4. Often

Wrong: off-ten
Right: OFF-en

That “t” is usually silent. But fair warning—both are accepted in modern English. Still, “OFF-en” sounds more polished in formal speech.

5. Espresso

Wrong: ex-presso
Right: es-PRESS-o

Unless you’re making it extra fast, drop the “X”—it’s not an express coffee!

6. Library

Wrong: lie-berry
Right: LIE-brer-ee

Three syllables, not two. Say it slowly and clearly—and impress your book-loving friends.

7. Nuclear

Wrong: noo-kyoo-lur
Right: NOO-klee-er

Even U.S. presidents have famously fumbled this one. Let’s get it right, shall we?

8. Supposedly

Wrong: suppose-ably
Right: su-POSE-ed-lee

There’s no “B” in there. It’s not a superhero. Just remember: -bly, not -ably.

9. Zoology

Wrong: zoo-ology
Right: zoh-AH-luh-jee

We know it’s tempting to say “zoo,” but it’s more like “zoh.” Think biology with animals.

10. February

Wrong: feb-yoo-air-ee
Right: FEB-roo-air-ee

Yes, that sneaky “r” after the “b” is supposed to be pronounced—even if most people skip it.

🧩 Bonus Tip: Record Yourself!

Sometimes the best way to fix pronunciation is to hear yourself out loud. Try reading this list and recording your voice. You’ll be surprised at what you catch!
