How to give warnings | Effective Communication

Warnings are part of disciplinary actions. A person who violates any rule or regulation must be warned immediately to avoid repeating his/her action. A warning can be verbal or written. In school, it is normal that students to be given a verbal warning by their teachers if they have annoying behavior in class. But teachers are careful in throwing words at every student because they also follow the code of ethics as professionals. Verbal warnings are also done by parents at home when they have to discipline their children and follow their advice.

When it comes to a written warning, it is more formal than verbal. It follows certain procedures or processes. Usually, it is done in a workplace when an employee is given a first written warning because of his/her misconduct. It will then undergo verbal warning through a private meeting or hearing to explain the employee’s side. Evidence in giving a written warning is also important to make the conversation clear. More importantly, the person being warned should know the reason for the warning, and the expectations from them to not repeat their misconduct and they must be aware of the consequences if they violated again. The employee’s poor performance could also be one of the reasons for giving a written warning. This is to improve their performance in their job if they did not meet the standards of the company.

Sometimes, warnings are not enough to change one’s behavior. We can notice some warning signs and symbols anywhere that are being ignored. With this, it is important to give warnings in an effective way to convince people. Discipline is what we need. If we have this, we can avoid any wrong action even without a warning. It is not just a reminder, but warnings play an important role in one’s safety and protection.
