Adjective, Adverb, and Noun Agreement
In constructing sentences, it is a must for the words to be cohesive and agrees with each other. It is important for the words to agree with each other because if not, it can cause confusion for the readers. Adjectives, adverbs, and nouns should agree in sentences for a better structure.
First off, adjectives describe the noun/s in the sentence. Adverb, on the other hand, qualifies an adjective, verb, or another adverb in a sentence. And lastly, nouns refer to any word that names a person, place, thing, action, and such.
Heading over to the adjective, adverb, and noun agreement, let us first explain noun agreement. Nouns can either be singular or plural. Thus, it is important to identify if the noun/s is/are singular or plural for us to know which kind of adjective and adverb should be used.
In connection to that, let us now explain the adjective agreement and how nouns affect the adjective that will be used. Adjectives should agree with the word it modifies. If the noun in the sentence is feminine, the adjective should agree with that. If the noun is plural, the adjective should also agree with that.
Examples:
- The pretty girl walked behind me.
- Jane is a very gorgeous actress.
- Three gorgeous women performed on the stage.
Moreover, adjectives have three forms namely: Positive, Comparative, and Superlative. To expound on the Comparative form, it is important that we use an appropriate adjective under this form.
Examples:
- She is wiser than her mother.
- The first candy was sweeter than the second one.
Next is adverb agreement. Adverb agreement is very essential to explain the manner of action. There are degrees of adverbs. One is in comparative form. The -ly from an adverb is important when in comparative form. To have an easier understanding, here are some examples:
- Chan answered more quickly than Jon.
- Talk more quietly.
Overall, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns should all time agree with each other. The agreement of these three makes the sentence easier to comprehend. Moreover, if we know how to use words to agree with each other, this can bridge the way for better construction of sentences and can enhance our ability to construct complex sentences in the future as well.
