MISPLACED PARTICIPIAL PHRASES

Participle functions as an adjective in a sentence, it must be at the side of the noun or pronoun that it directly modifies. Always take note that present participles end in “-ing”, while past participles end in “-ed”. However, there are also misplaced participle phrases. These phrases are not closer to the noun that it modifies. It can cause confusion to the readers and even to the one who created the sentence. Misplaced participles need to be rewritten or reorganized to avoid wrong grammar.

These are a few of the misplaced participial phrases with corrections:

  • Travelling from town to town, I brought my guitar.
The guitar is not travelling from town to town – I am.
Correction: I brought my guitar as I am travelling from town to town.

  • I was super late to ROTC Saturday formation running through the field at the last minute.
