Analyzing can be quite daunting but fear not. It has always been a part of our lives. We practice it daily to solve problems, watch movies, read newspapers, etc. We are quite experienced in this field, and it is essential whichever scenario in our life because we can analyze and decipher to resolve issues.
According to Bergin (2017), a passage is a portion of a written work that can either be fiction or non-novel. A selection can be a short sentence or one or more paragraphs.
Importance of Analyzing a Literary Passage
Provide a fresh perspective of a text. Analyzing encourages creativity, and it helps show a person’s attitude and point of view of a book. Doing so helps create ingenious ideas. Also, to take a subject from a different angle, coming up with novel ideas.
Develops critical thinking skills. Through analyzing, one can build critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills are greatly encouraged and utilized in schools. They place great importance on this because of its significance either in school or outside the school. By practicing critical thinking, a person can identify essential ideas, and loopholes in reasoning, resolve issues and introspect about themselves.
Empathize. When you analyze something, you try to imagine like putting yourself in one’s shoes. Through this, one can learn to empathize.
Provide support. It is vital that when you make a claim, you can support it with logical statements. An argument becomes weak when you can’t keep what you said. If you can do this, this can help you in day-to-day life to prove your point in class.

Steps in Analyzing a Passage
- Comprehension. Read and read until you understand.
- Interpretation. After you understand what the passage is about, you then interpret it by imagining the whole picture.
- Analytical Statement. Provide an analytical statement of the whole passage. It can include the plot, theme, and setting of the passage. There are many ways to provide an analysis in a passage. It differs in how it is analyzed and interpreted.
