COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE
A compound-complex sentence is a special type of sentence. It is actually a combination of two kinds of sentences, the compound sentence which is comprised of both an independent and dependent clause. It has more than two clauses by which there are at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. The types of conjunction used in this case are the coordinating conjunctions and the conjunctive adverbs. A coordinating conjunction is used when the elements of rank and importance. For, and, nor, but, or, yet and so are coordinating conjunction, and here is how they are used;
Example :
1. Today is sports day but I am not good at any sports, so I choose to watch from afar.
But and so are coordinating conjunction is used.
Dependent Clause- Today is sports day
Independent Clause- I am not good in any sports
I choose to watch from afar
2. Martha has a great voice, she chose to dance in the program and actually enjoyed it very much.
Independent Clause- Martha has a great voice
She chose to dance in the program
Dependent Clause- And actually enjoyed it very much
A conjunctive adverb is used to modify the clause by adding an adverbial modifier in the main clause. Some examples of conjunctive adverbs are instead, moreover, meanwhile, nevertheless, otherwise, therefore, and etc.
Example:
1. Father had to drive me from our place to the city to so he can sell our crops, therefore, he came home late but mother gets really mad about it
Dependent Clause- Therefore he came home later
So he can sell our crops
Independent Clause- Father had to drive from our place to the city
But mother gets really mad about it
2. While everyone is busy preparing for the Christmas party, Jona decides to spend her vacation catching up with her backlogs so she will not be able to spend time with her family this year.
Independent Clause- Jona decides to spend her vacation catching up with her backlogs
Dependent Clause-While everyone is busy preparing for the Christmas party
So she will not be able to spend time with her family this year.
